"Get my plane ready. I'm going up." - Joseph Sullivan "Sky Captain", upon witnessing the Flying Wings for the first time through his binoculars, during the Attack on Flying Legion Base.

Flying Wings

The Flying Wings are flying machines that were created by Dr Totenkopf as part of his robot army.

Armament and Technical Specifications[]

The Flying Wings are large, sleek, manta ray shaped ornithopters in terms of design. The Flying Wings are formidably well armed with eight forward facing quad cannons, which can extend and retract from protective gun pods. When in flight, the Flying Wings flap their wings slowly, but their wings move faster when the Flying Wings engage in combat, thus making them fast and agile battle-craft opponents in battle. However the Flying Wings are not without weaknesses, as they can't turn very well in tight space or corners. The Flying Wings are capable of landing, using its sharply angled wingtips as landing gear to balance the fuselage. It remains unknown as to what the exact crew complement is. The Flying Wings are also equipped with tractor beams in order to lift objects off the ground (as for example New York City’s own power generators).

History[]

The Flying Wings were first used to attack the Flying Legion Base and effectively wiping out all of the base's military and air force defenses in a surprisingly swift and devastating surprise attack, effectively killing all of the base's personal, except Dexter "Dex" Dearborn. The Flying Machines also went back to New York City to retrieve the generators, while the other Flying Wings pursued Sky Captain's aircraft (with reporter Polly Perkins along for the ride) through the city, managing to outmaneuver and destroy several Flying Wings using the city's natural terrain to his advantage, and eventually using the ocean itself in order to escape from the pursuing Flying Wings, which exploded on impact as they hit the water.

Later, the unnamed female robotic android assassin had her own personal Flying Wing waiting for her in Nepal, after she took the two "Adam and Eve" vials from two Human Tibetan agents (that she presumably killed after retrieving said vials), before boarding her craft and heading back to base, just after witnessing the abandoned mine's explosion.

It remains unknown as to what became of all of the surviving Flying Wings once Totenkopf's Ark Rocket Ship was destroyed, however it can be safely assumed that they were all most likely captured by the Humans for study, as soon as they have occupied the secret island base (off-screen).

Trivia[]

  • The Flying Wing was designed with two primary influences; The German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft Junkers Ju 87, more popularly known as the "Stuka" and the secondary influence was the flying monkeys from the 1939 musical film adaption of Lyman Frank Baum's novel "The Wizard of Oz" (coincidentally the same film being projected at Radio City Music Hall prior to the Eisen Flieger attack).
  • During production, the Flying Wings were referred to as "Flapping Wings".
  • It is unknown as to who exactly designed both the concept art and the beautifully well detailed CGI model of the Flying Wing aircraft.
  • In 2005 Dark Horse released a rare Christmas ornament of the iconic Flying Wings.
